Hoping to connect, Des meets her guarded Ghanaian mother for therapy, but buried resentments test their fragile bond.
Des invites her mother, Maude to a therapy session but she’s wearing the wrong color. Not for therapy, but for her aunt’s wake-keeping, the Ghanaian funeral rite honoring the departed. This quiet sign of how far Des has drifted from her family’s culture offends Maude, starting the session on the wrong foot.
After a charged session, there isn’t time to debrief. The pomp-and-circumstance of the wake-keeping doesn’t leave room for vulnerability. The passive aggressive silence materializes into spoken resentments and Des is unsure if healing is possible or if some distances can’t be crossed.
Maude is late for their next appointment, which isn’t a good sign for this heart-to-heart. Still, Dr. Hall helps uncover the resentments that have shaped Des and Maude’s relationship.
